We’re pinching the zinnias today. While this may seem counterintuitive, taking the top portion off encourages branching which means more flowers and a bushier plant. I’m so excited to see these guys bloom and share it with you all!
This variety is Benary’s Giant Mix.

We grow herbs as well!
We have a variety of herbs ready including:
- chives
- cilantro
- various kinds of mint
- dill
- various kinds of basil
- rosemary
- thyme

Tonight’s task: weed my flower rows!
Now you may be saying, “I thought you were growing vegetables!”
You’re not wrong with that thought. A couple reasons were including flowers in our vegetable garden:
1) They attract beneficial insects! This helps keep away the ‘bad’ insects and promotes pollinators to come and pollinate our other plants!
2) Flowers are pretty! I plan to have some simple bouquets available later this summer so keep your eye out for that!
3) They give the soil a break! Not so much this year, since it’s our first year, but in years to come this gives the soil a little bit of a break and gives it some nutrients it may depleted in so we can better grow vegetables the next year!

Come with me to weed between the rows of potatoes 🥔
This will most likely be our last time we have to weed between the potato plants because as you can see they are getting big! This means they will be shading out the weeds between them and the weeds won’t be competing with the potatoes any longer if there a few that try to come up.
We will still have to till between the rows to keep the weeds at bay and that’s something that my husband likes to help me out with when he has time.

Today we put our tomato trellises in! 🍅
We used the method called the California Weave. To do this we put a T-post every 3 tomatoes to help hold a string that is weaved in and out of the tomatoes to hold them up. We will continue to add layers as they grow taller to keep them from folding onto the ground.
Tomatoes do not like their leaves to be touching the ground and are at a higher risk of for disease if the soil is wet and the leaves are touching it.

Spot the difference!
This is my first and second succession of Brussels sprouts here. Funny enough they aren’t too much different in size… while succession planting is very helpful for spreading out harvest, it’s hard in the beginning to time them all just right. So much of it depends on temperatures and rain. This first one was planted when it was still cooler out so it didn’t grow quite as fast. The second one grew a lot faster since it was exposed to hot temps right away and got a shot of rain on it.
